Review by Frederick Barton (Cybersecurity Editor)

People who use your computer without your consent can be quite annoying. Setting up a screen saver which will prompt for a password may not be too efficient. It will either engage too late or too soon, when you are still around. A simpler way to go is with Chris PC-Lock. It can be ideal for these situations. The program can lock down the computer just like a screen saver, but it will only go off when you tell it to.

A small, 2.73 Mb kit is all you need to download in order to prevent people from using your PC. The installation process is almost instant, so you can have it protecting your computer even if you have to leave in a hurry.

There is no interface or anything of the sorts to navigate. When running the program you'll need to set a password. Now, when you have to leave your computer running, you can just double click PC-Lock's system tray icon. This will immediately launch a screen saver which you can only exit if you provide the correct password.

The only additional feature you can find is a virtual keyboard you can use. Just click its designated button from the window which will prompt you for a password when you try to exit the screen saver. Other than this, there are no other options to be found. The screen saver will feature some stock images, but if you want others, you will have to change them yourself by navigating to the folder it's been installed in and copying your own pictures. The program will automatically pick them up, so there's no need to perform a refresh action or anything of the sorts.

Pros

Chris PC-Lock is a simple tool you can use to immediately password protect your computer if you leave it running. Everything, from downloading the application to running it will take no time at all. It's not expensive and if you buy it, you'll have access to free technical support and free lifetime upgrades.

Cons

Some additional options would have been welcomed. At least for setting a transition type. In a few seconds, Chris PC-Lock can lock down your computer so that no one may use it unless they know your password.
